2016 Cabernet Sauvignon, Seven Hills Vineyard, Walla Walla Valley
94 points, Wine Spectator
92+ points, Jeb Dunnuck
This wine is drawn from the original estate founding Cabernet Sauvignon blocks at Seven Hills Vineyard, planted by the McClellan family in 1980. The vintage marks the 29th year of making Cabernet Sauvignon from these same vines.
2016 was a vintage of welcome moderate weather, after the trio of warm to hot years in 2013-2015. The grapes were ripe but balanced, with full fruit flavor. This old vine Cabernet has a dark red color and a generous nose of berry, vanillin, sweet spice, and light desert herb. The palate is open, plush and mouth-filling yet framed with silky, fine-grained tannins and balanced acidity. It has flavors of raspberry, cherry, plum, and hints of resinous herb and tobacco leaf. The wine will improve significantly with cellaring over the first five years, and will hold nicely and continue to develop for ten or more years from vintage.
